The Truth Is, We All Lie
Why do we lie to ourselves? Why do we lie to ourselves about ourselves? Why do we talk ourselves into things we'll later regret? Why do we talk ourselves out of things that have the potential to bring us absolute joy and fulfillment?
We see what we want to see. We hear what we want to hear. We look for reasons that justify what we’re already inclined to do. Most of us want to be proven right more than we want to know what's true.
How do we stop?
Admit it.
The sooner you embrace this truth about yourself, the sooner you'll be able to make a change. The easier it will be to recognize what you are tempted to justify may be a lie you're telling yourself.
Ask it.
Ask the question, am I being honest with myself…really?
Stand in front of the mirror. Look yourself in the eye. Ask yourself by name.
Be curious.
When we push through our discomfort and get curious about why we're feeling what we're feeling and are determined to do what we are hell-bent on doing, we get to the truth. But most people don't do that. Don't be most people.
The truth is, it's much easier to lie to ourselves than be honest and admit what we'd rather ignore. When we're honest with ourselves, we're forced to accept responsibility. We have an obligation to keep ourselves accountable.
Be honest with yourself. Nothing truly great in your life ever came out of anything less. You deserve to be free from excuses, justifications, and lies.
"You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
