How To Understand Sugar Cravings & Get Them Under Control
If I had a nickel for every time a client disclosed, often despairingly, that they crave sweets... Many believe that craving sugar means something is wrong with us, especially when diet culture constantly tells us that sugar is "bad." However, this is not necessarily true. By understanding our sugar cravings and making minor changes to our eating habits and mindset, managing these cravings can be relatively easy.
EAT REGULARLY
Have you ever wondered why you crave sweets so much? The answer might surprise you. Irregular meal times or skipped meals can cause your body to crave the sweet stuff. This isn't a reflection of your willpower or character. It's just your body's way of communicating that it needs something. When we skip meals or go too long without eating, our blood sugar can drop to dangerous levels, and sugar is the quickest way to raise it. So, if you're not eating enough or have an erratic eating schedule, your body may crave sweets as a source of fuel. Remember, it's not your fault. It's just your body's natural response.
EAT CARBS
If you find yourself craving sweets and carbs even though you're eating regular meals, it's likely because you need more carbs. Don't worry; this doesn't mean you're doing something wrong or carbs are bad. In fact, carbs are the body's preferred source of energy. Even if you're eating lots of protein, fat, and vegetables, not having enough carbs can lead to cravings. The solution is simple: make sure you're eating carbs regularly throughout the day. Opt for carbs with fiber, such as whole grains, potatoes with the skin, beans, legumes, and fruits, to help you feel full and maintain steady blood sugar levels.
EAT SOME SUGAR
As a nutrition coach, I recommend incorporating sugar into your diet. Although excessive consumption of added sugar may contribute to chronic disease, it's important to acknowledge the psychological reasons why we crave sweets. Refusing ourselves of something we enjoy, like cake, can lead to misery and intense cravings. By removing the cake from your "off-limits" list and making it available, you can decrease its power over you and ultimately reduce your cravings for sweets in the long run. So enjoy some sweets regularly as part of a balanced diet.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Rather than trying to "control" our cravings for sweets and sugary foods, let's consider what our diet may be lacking and our relationship with food. If you find this task overwhelming, let's discuss how it pertains to your lifestyle and objectives. I am always available to assist you.
